The Dutch driving process, simplified

From foreign resident to Dutch licence in 5 steps.

If you're new to the Netherlands, the system can look bureaucratic. It isn't, once you know the steps. Here's the path we'll walk together.

1
Step 1

Trial lesson

We meet, drive 90 minutes, and assess your starting level. €56 for the trial lesson, refunded if you continue with lessons. You decide afterwards whether it's a fit.

2
Step 2

Theory exam (CBR)

The Dutch theory exam. Available in English and easier than its reputation. We point you to English study materials (we recommend itheorie.nl).

3
Step 3

Health declaration

A simple online form via mijn.cbr.nl, available in English. We guide you through it.

4
Step 4

Practical lessons

90-minute lessons across the Roermond area. Every step explained in English. You see your progress live in the student app.

5
Step 5

Practical exam (CBR)

You take the exam at CBR Roermond, in the same car you've been training in. The examiner speaks English on request.

FAQ

Common questions from international learners.

Do I need to take the theory exam in Dutch?
No. The Dutch theory exam (CBR) is available in English. We'll point you to the official English study materials and help you prepare.
I have a foreign driving license, do I still need lessons?
It depends on the country. EU and certain other licenses can be exchanged. Otherwise, a short refresher track gets you ready for the Dutch test efficiently.
How many lessons will I need?
It varies: beginners typically need 30 to 40 lessons of 90 minutes, refreshers fewer. We give you an honest estimate after the trial lesson.
How does payment work?
You pay per block of 4 or 8 lessons up front, via bank transfer or Tikkie. At one lesson per week, you pay for one or two months ahead. No large package up front.
